Locked Hearts!

Is your heart averse to the teachings in the Holy Qur’an? Or does it flinch when thinking of the Holy Prophet (PBUH)? If your heart rejects and recoils at such teachings and advice beware, this is the syndrome that your heart is being shut from receiving beneficial guidance.

You would be lucky to realize this dangerous syndrome, which is not easy as the realization too has to be processed in and by the very heart which now has become immune to good things. Suppose, your mental power and religious perception which you have acquired is strong enough to make this comprehension then rush toward repentance. We should hurry before our heart becomes irretrievably hardened by our sins and before it becomes impossibly slammed shut. Allah says about this kind of people in His final revelation:

‘Allah has set a seal on their hearts and on their hearing and on their eyes there is a shield; theirs will be a great torment’    (Al Baqarah: 7)

No one can persuade persons with such hearts to repent. There is no difference in warning them or not warning them. Allah says its never going to benefit them.

Allah says in another instance about some persons whose hearts are being closed but could avoid it if they are vigilant.
‘Do they not then think deeply in the Qur’an or are their hearts locked up (from considering it)?’     (Muhammad:24)

He further says:

‘In their hearts is a disease and Allah increased their disease’    (Al Baqarah:10)

The disease here means its incapacity to comprehend the truth and refusal to accept Divine guidance. Diseased hearts that never get cured end up in the eternal Hellfire.

Allah says in another instance about unyielding hearts as follows:

‘They have hearts wherewith they understand not, they have eyes wherewith they see not they have ears wherewith they hear not’    (Al A’raf:179)

There are some hearts which Allah has left open but they choose to slam it shut. These are the weak ones who succumb to the enticements of the evil. Allah says how the disbelievers entice them not to heed the commandments of the Creator:

‘And those who disbelieve say, ‘Listen not to this Qur’an, and make noise in the midst of its (recitation) that you may overcome’               (Ha Mim:26)

There are the blessed ones among these people who narrowly escape eternal destruction and Allah explains how they would praise the Lord for saving them.

‘By Allah, you nearly ruined me. Had it not been for the Grace of my Lord, I would have certainly been among those brought forth (to Hell)’       (Assaf: 56)

The Holy Qur’an also explains how damned in Hell would regret not heeding the call of the Messengers of Allah, in several places. But no mercy would be shown to them and they would be ridiculed by Allah on the Day of Judgment.

There are some people whose hearts are open but have forgotten the objectives due to the chaos of this world.

‘But whosoever turns away from my Remembrance, verily for him is a life of hardship, and We shall raise him up blind on the Day of Resurrection’ (Ta Ha:124)

How unfortunate he is! If the ultimate end of those who close their hearts from hearing the truth and those who forget their objective is so severe, what would be the situation of those who persuade and entice others to shut their senses from seeing, hearing and comprehending the truth?

We mention these facts for a broader audience as we cannot meet everyone in person and also because we cannot overlook our responsibility of discussing the shortcomings of the Umma. Some folks say that no one should attempt to teach them anything and that their knowledge is sufficient for them and for the folk in their areas.

When youth attend to Dawa classes some discourage them. ‘Are not you a Muslim? Do you not know about Islam? Just stay at home. If you go and waste time in those classes who is going look after your affairs?’

The above is just an example of attempting to close other’s hearts. Are these attempts unleashed by the avowed enemies of Islam? No, it is the handiwork of our own.

Recently a person belonging to a specific movement came from Trincomalee and pleaded with us not to come to their area to conduct our programs. When he was assured that we would not stop anyone from coming for their activities, he said that he knows it well but claimed that people who attend our programs never leave it to come back to their programs!

Jama’at E Islami, which has held its programs in countless towns and villages in this country, has never criticized or mud-slung other movements or their activities. We are forthright about this claim. We look upon the Islamic Umma as a single body and ours is not the hand that strangles its own body.

We utilize wisdom and graciousness to carry our message to the Umma. We do not claim ours is the only way for salvation. We believe that these qualities would help us open closed hearts. Those who do not want to open their hearts should be the unfortunate ones that cannot bear the brilliance of Islam. Such people always bank on conspiracy, intimidation, false accusation and other loathsome means to achieve their so called goals.

But they never realize that Heaven has been created for the sound hearts!
